Handmade products. Empowering women. Creating opportunities.
BALADARSHAN connects dozens of producer groups and individual artisans across South India. At its heart are women handicraft producers from Chennai’s underserved communities, supported by SPEED Trust, our associated NGO working in the city since 2000.

Our products and craftsmanship
Our work centres on designing, producing and promoting handmade products. A dedicated group weaves colourful, durable baskets and bags from polyethylene plastic wire, with a particular focus on opportunities for women with disabilities. Our tailoring unit transforms existing materials into useful upcycled products. Traditional skills, practical design and thoughtful use of materials come together in every piece.

Livelihoods, dignity and inclusion
BALADARSHAN creates opportunities for women facing social and economic barriers, including widows, mothers abandoned by their partners, women with physical disabilities and people affected by HIV. Producer groups and individual artisan networks help women earn a livelihood, build confidence and support their families. Their earnings can contribute to food, healthcare, children’s education and everyday needs. SPEED Trust’s wider community programmes support families and help women develop skills and independence.

Useful bags, made to last
Strong wire and careful weaving make these bags versatile companions for shopping, the beach, picnics and family life. Reusable designs offer an alternative to disposable shopping bags. Our upcycled products give existing materials a new use while supporting women’s skills and livelihoods. Ask our team about the material composition and recycled content of the specific product you choose.

Handmade with purpose
Our vision brings together craftsmanship, women’s empowerment and responsible production. From Chennai’s communities to artisan networks across South India, we connect handmade products with wider markets and celebrate the creativity and determination of the women behind them. Every product represents the hands that made it, the livelihood it supports and the possibility of a better future.
